Okay, truth time. In case you already find me completely unbearable I implore you to click away before I admit this: I’ve now seen Wicked five times- 3x in Toronto, New York City and London- and this was probably my least favourite production of Wicked I’ve seen.
It wasn’t a bad production by any means, but when you’ve seen a show this many times, you can’t help but compare them.
The first two times I saw this in Toronto, I was blessed to see the double-name witches- Mary-Kate Morrissey and Ginna Claire Mason and I’ve been chasing the high of seeing a Glinda and Elphaba with that much chemistry since.
Elphaba (Lauren Samuels) had an amazing voice but overall was not my favourite. Glinda (Austen Danielle Bohmer) nailed the comedic parts of her role, her voice fell kind of flat- especially during the operatic parts in “No One Mourns the Wicked.”
FUN FACT: Broadway queen, Stephanie J. Block, was ALMOST the original Elphaba. While she played the role of Elphaba in the early workshops, they decided they needed a bigger, more well-known name in the role and chose Idina Menzel instead.
TICKET TIP: This is another beloved show in Toronto so tickets are both expensive and hard to obtain. The Mirvish Lottery is offered for a lot of popular shows- but of course, is never a guarantee.
